5 Quick Renovations and Repairs for Spring!
Now that the weather’s nicer, I’m hearing a lot of what I think of as the three main sounds of spring: birds singing, kids playing, and of course, the on and off drone of power tools from your neighbour’s yards. It seems as soon as the days get slightly longer and warmer, homeowners come out of their winter slumber and immediately start on spring home renovation projects. I’ve compiled a list of a few common spring repairs that’ll beautify and add value to your home.
1. Repair Your Roof
April showers might bring May flowers but they’ll also show off any problems with your roof mighty fast. Living in the Okanagan, we don’t suffer through the drastic freeze/thaw cycle the rest of the country does, but damage still happens, and even a minor leak can turn into a major problem quickly. Whether you only repair the shingles that need it or replace the whole thing, taking care of that leaky roof early is a good idea.
A lack of outdoor lighting can make your home a target for thieves and give it a creepy, Addams Family vibe. Replace those burnt out bulbs and broken fixtures to bring some light back into your life. Better still, add some new ones to highlight your home’s finer features! Nowadays, there are plenty of solar lighting options that look fantastic and don’t need to be wired into your main power supply.
This is probably the simplest renovation you can do but the difference it makes is unbelievable. Inside or out, a fresh coat of paint does wonders for your home. If you have siding, just paint the trim around your windows and doors. Even that small change helps give everything a fresh feel.
4. Eaves trough
Depending on how big your home is, this one could be a little more involved. Your gutters can take a beating over winter so have a quick look for any cracked or warped sections of eaves trough and clear out any blockages. You want to make sure that water can flow freely away from your home. Usually these are easy to repair. The hardest part? Getting up on the ladder to do this. (I’ve probably got a single storey rancher or two on my listings page if you want to make it easier on yourself! If not, just let me know and I can help find you one.)
5. Build a Deck
The only thing better than relaxing on a patio is relaxing on your patio. Whether you’re building a deck from scratch or replacing one that’s all beat up, this is a great addition to any home. Plus, building one in the spring means you get to work in cooler weather. When those summer scorcher days roll around, you’ll be able to stretch out and enjoy the fruits of your labour to the fullest. Preferably with some friends and a few drinks.
Obviously there are far more spring renovation projects you could take on but these are a great start. They don’t require a ton of effort, will keep your home looking sharp, and best of all, can help you sell your Okanagan property should that time come. If it does, I’d love to help you.
